montgomery county case study microgrid backup power

Project Details

Located adjacent to Washington D.C., Montgomery County is home to more than 1.05 million people, most living in unincorporated locales.

In 2017, County leaders passed a resolution to reduce greenhouse gas emission by 80 percent by 2027 and 100% by 2035. Crucial to achieving its emissions reductions goals is the County’s Solar Initiative that lowers utility bills while also assuring stable grid access, particularly on increasingly hotter summer days.

Two solar-powered microgrids involving over 2.5 MW of total generation were installed at the Public Safety Headquarters and Montgomery County Correctional Facility. The Headquarters installation was the first Maryland project to receive the Performance Excellence in Electricity Renewal (PEER) certification.
