Featured Case Study – Blue Lake Rancheria

Project Details

As a federally recognized Native American tribe located in far northwestern California, Blue Lake Rancheria provides jobs, emergency services and health care to their community. During emergencies, the Rancheria also serves as a Red Cross Emergency Center.

The tribe seeks to achieve zero-net carbon emissions by 2030. It is implementing strategic Climate Smart Resiliency initiatives to sustainably address the community’s needs for energy, food sovereignty, water, communications, and information technology (IT).

Working with REC Solar, the tribe deployed a resilient microgrid including 448 kW solar generation, 950 kWh battery energy storage, microgrid controller and equipment, and existing generator. The result is a microgrid that pays for itself through emissions-free self-generation and load shifting. When the grid is unavailable, it powers more than 50% of operations and keeps a Red Cross Emergency Center running.
