Project Description
The Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) Terminal Approach Center (TRACON) services aircraft in Northern California with safety alerts, air traffic sequencing, and airspace management. Thousands of operations are completed year round, 24 hours a day, 7 days, resulting in significant energy demand.
REC Solar built a 144 KW carport-mounted installation, including electric vehicle charging stations, and a 1,008 KW ground-mounted single-axis tracker array. Combined, these systems generate approximately 50% of the facility’s electricity needs. The project was financed using an Energy Services Agreement (ESA) where a third party owns and operates the system, and power is sold to the facility at a rate lower than the local utility. REC Solar operates and maintains the system to continually maximize production and performance.
“This is the largest FAA facility that has implemented this range of improvements and the savings are impressive.”Michael Huerta, FAA Administrator
