Project Description

Castoro Cellars has produced estate grown wine on California’s Central Coast since 1983. As the winery grew, so did operating expenses, with utility bills reaching over $250,000 a year. Winery owner Niels Udsen knew he needed a way to offset energy costs as he continued to expand production. He was attracted to solar for its ability to quickly offset costs and the short payback period.

Since 2006, Castoro and REC Solar have partnered to build six solar projects at various properties. The winery now runs entirely on renewable energy. For the most recent installation at Stone’s Throw vineyard, REC Solar’s team proposed use of California’s net metering aggregation program to site the array in the optimal location while offsetting load from their processing facility meter.

“The reason we went solar was that it was the right thing to do.”

Niels Udsen, Castoro Cellars Owner
