The Athenian School - Danville, CA
220 kW (DC) Solar Electric System

The Athenian School

Description: The Athenian School is a private college-prep school of about 450 students from grades 6-12 located in Danville, CA. The Athenian School has counted environmental stewardship among its most important ideals. In December 2008 that ideal was further realized with the completion of a 220 kW solar power generation plant on the school’s campus. As one of five bidders on the project, REC Solar stood out as the clear leader. "REC Solar did a great job communicating with The Athenian School through every step of the process. They helped us overcome some of the unique challenges with installing solar on a steep hillside, and exceeded all of our expectations," says Bob Oxenburgh, the school’s director of finance and operations.

Poway High School - Poway, CA
Buildings C, D, E, F, H, J, K, N5, N6, W

694 kW (DC) Solar Electric System

Description: REC Solar installed systems for four different Poway schools in Poway, CA. The total size of all systems combined is 694 kW with expected production over 1,000,000 kWh per year. REC Solar handled all engineering, procurement, and contracting for the project, as well as all DSA (District State Architect) approval. REC Solar will also be performing educational sessions for students, parents, and teachers about solar electricity and how it works and benefits our world.

City of Colton, CA
28.8 kW (DC) Solar Electric System

Description: Colton Electric Utility installed a solar electric system on the roof of their 120 foot carport. The project manager, Gerald Katz, has expressed intentions to expand usage of solar electricity largely due to excellent performance of the system. Not only is this solar electric system creating clean renewable energy, it is also creating shade for many employees’ cars. "We believe that solar energy will play an increasingly important role for the utility in the coming years," said Gerald Katz, project manager for the city of Colton.

Air Pollution Control District - San Luis Obispo, CA
22.4 kW (DC) Solar Electric System

Air Pollution Control

Description: The San Luis Obispo Air Pollution Control District is focused on creating environmentally friendly solutions and clean air monitoring. Headquartered in San Luis Obispo California, REC Solar was a natural fit to install a solar electric system at this facility. The SLOAPCD operations now benefits from clean renewable energy. The solar power system produces approximately 35, 850 kWh annually and has a post tax return of 18% I.R.R. The solar power system was designed to withstand 75 m.p.h. wind speeds that blow through the Central Coast.

South Gate City Hall
44.5 kW (DC) Solar Electric System

South Gate City Hall

Description: This solar electric system was installed as part of an overall energy-efficiency overhaul undertaken by the city. REC Solar was subcontracted by Chevron/Texaco, the company conducting the overhaul, to design and install the solar electricity. The carport design is extremely functional, providing shelter to the vehicles in the city’s parking lot. The inverters are mounted on the inside of the carport so that they are easily accessible, yet not occupying unnecessary space.

This system was designed with 270 Sharp 165-watt solar panels and 15 SMA 2500-watt inverters. It generates 68,273 kilowatt-hours of electricity annually.

NASA, Edward's Airforce Base, CA
5.3 kW (DC) Solar Electric System

NASA-200pix

Description: For NASA this solar power system was built to represent its transfesr of technology from space applications of solar to earth. REC Solar was contracted by NASA and SunPower to design and install the system at NASA’s site at Edward’s Air Force Base.

The system was designed with (24) 200-watt SunPower solar panels, (12) 1980’s Vintage Solarex Modules, (2) SMA 2500-Watt Inverters, and (1) SMA 700-Watt Inverter. This system generates 8,300 kilowatt-hours of electricity annually.

City of Santa Cruz Waste Water Treatment Facility
50.4 kW (DC) Solar Electric System

Santa Cruz

Description: REC Solar installed this system in conjunction with an upgrade to the facility’s biogas/natural gas electric cogeneration system. The combined facilities produce 100% of the waste water treatment plant’s power. This system was designed to be integrated into the tank structures. REC designed for tank usability and system durability in a highly corrosive environment. The system provided a public relations benefit to the city by demonstrating its dedication to protecting the environment.

This system was designed with (420) Astropower 120-watt panels and (18) SMA 2500-watt inverters. It generates 83,600 kilowatt-hours of electricity annually.

California State Parks - Tule Elk Reserve
17.6 kW (DC) Solar Electric System

California State Parks

Description: Tule Elk Reserve installed solar tracking systems using Astropower panels. These tracking systems will create better overall efficiency and production by following the path of the sun. The ZomeWork tracking units utilize active tracking, by incorporating solar liquid heating to gauge the position of the sun. California State parks funded the project to offset partial electrical energy usage at the facility and in order to support its core mission of preserving the environment.
